I also polled my friends to get some of their thoughts on what they think when they see the word “integrity” or “academic integrity,” their responses are below:

“Actions consistent with what you believe, even when no one is watching…doing your school work to the best of your ability. Not doing enough just to get by but desiring to learn, master and engage in the material in order to apply it to everyday life.” –A.W.

    “Character. Moral Fiber” –R.R.

“Upholding your standards, doing what you think is the right thing to do.” –M.I.

“Doing as you say you will, upholding trust.
People: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton” –B.B.

“When I think of integrity I think about people doing what they say they will and living to their moral compass.” –M.K.H.

“Honest, truthfulness, taking responsibility for yourself, your actions and your decisions. Academic Integrity --- studying for your tests, not cheating on quizzes/tests or plagiarizing on papers, doing your work by yourself.” –M.J.

“Keeping your word and seeking to understand your actions and motives and their implications before acting.” –D.N.

“Having a set of core values that you always honor and hold high.” –D.J.

“Being true to yourself; responsible and honest.” –D.H.

“To do what you believe is right, no matter what the circumstances are. Living your life by the morals that you have set for yourself and believe in. Academic integrity is learning and testing on the material from class in a way that doesn’t violate any policies set by the university and using your own judgment/morals on how to do that.” –M.T.

“It’s more than upholding your personal standards and values, it is upholding the standards and values honored by society (I am not saying that all standards of society are necessarily “correct”, these should be individually analyzed, but there are some overlying concepts.) Integrity has to do more with interaction with other people than it does with the person itself--- you can easily uphold your integrity on your own, but if you can do the same when facing others, then you have true integrity.” –H.N.

“Doing what’s right.” Also referenced Kohlberg’s stages of moral development. Most college-age students are in stage 4 or 5 (4: law and order; 5: prior rights and social contract). –L.H.

“Integrity: Doing the right thing even though it may not be the popular thing. Taking responsibility for your actions maturely. Respecting others.” –R.J.

I found it very interesting that the majority of the people I polled gave very broad definitions of doing the right thing when it came to what integrity meant to them. When I asked them to narrow down to academic integrity, they seemed to focus in on not cheating and doing the right thing. I think the biggest challenge we will have with this project is encouraging people to think outside of the box when it comes to academic integrity, and really encourage them to take pride in their school when they consider the term and their actions on and off campus.

  9. Lets see, when I think of integrity, I think of (and most of these have probably already been mentioned) values, honesty, morals/ethics, and being trustworthy, faithful, and truthful.

I also thought the column idea is good, but I think she mentioned in class how using columns is trite. I Google Imaged integrity, didn't find anything good, but I do like Ann's handshake idea, as a symbol for being trustworthy and having values/honesty.

  10. For me the word integrity brings ideas to mind such as honesty, standards, consistency, honor, unit, and wholeness.

I really like the idea for columns or the knot. I was thinking about symbols and an anchor or a ship's wheel came to mind; the anchor for holding fast to an idea/moral/standard and the wheel for going in the right direction. The honor aspect also reminded me of a shield.

  11. When I hear integrity I think of respect, honesty, ethics, moral issues/dilemmas, and standing up for what you believe is right

  12. Many of the websites, I visited sited: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility as components.

I like the bridge, but what about making it more human-- like having people, or hands holding up the bridge-- meaning- the ideals are great, but without everyone buying into the process, it won't work?

  13. Another thought- The etymology of the word "integrity" stems from the Latin adjective integer (whole, complete). Could we do something with this idea-- the whole, complete theme?

  14. Integrity: consistency of actions/thoughts/morals/values/etc. For some reason, the consistency across situations part really sticks out for me; the ability to conduct yourself similarly across the board and not allow people or "moral dilemmas" to sway you.

Consistency...no real picture comes to mind, but maybe we can explore it?

  15. i liked the compass idea as far as something that would be easy to manipulate its layout to fit our needs... we could have pictures at different places on the compass representing some of the key words that have been mentioned of what integrity is.

I also like the bridge but am struggling to picture a way to integrate all parts of integrity but that would be fun to work on.

  16. One thing I think of in regards to integrity that I don't think anybody else mentioned is being upfront. This is a part of honesty, but I think it's even more clear and intentional. Also, it is more transparent, like there is nothing to hide. Another quality of integrity is that it is selfless; showing integrity is not always easy but in the long run is what is best for everybody. One more idea of something that can be included is doing a fair share of group work. I know this has been mentioned in class, but one thing I think does not happen very well.

As for imagery ideas I think it should be circular or round, to indicate wholeness. I like the ideas of the anchor and knot.

  17. The column idea has been done so much--I prefer the bridge imagery--and especially bridges where the structural integrity is visible--like suspension bridges or cable ones. I *might* be able to be talked into a column, but it would be a lot harder to find something that hasn't been done to death.

I wonder if there are other things that convey structural integrity that haven't been mentioned--crystals or something small . . .
